Diaspora Tribute: Kenyans in Canberra Remember Raila Odinga
Over the weekend, the Kenyan community in Canberra came together for a moving vigil at the Kenya High Commission Chancery to honour the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and one of the most influential voices in the country’s political history.
Organised by the Kenyans in Canberra Association (KICA) in collaboration with the Kenya High Commission, the event drew members of the diplomatic corps, community leaders, and Kenyans living in the Australian capital to pay tribute to a man whose life’s work embodied resilience, courage, and a relentless pursuit of justice.
The evening was marked by heartfelt prayers, reflections, and candlelight tributes that filled the High Commission grounds with emotion and unity. As the candles glowed against the Canberra night sky, attendees shared memories and words of gratitude for Odinga’s lifelong service to Kenya and his enduring vision for a fair and democratic nation.
Speaking at the vigil, the Deputy High Commissioner expressed appreciation to all who gathered, noting that Odinga’s dedication to Kenya’s democratic transformation continues to inspire citizens both at home and abroad. His leadership, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to equality were remembered as defining hallmarks of a statesman whose influence transcended generations.
For Kenyans living in Australia, the vigil represented more than a farewell — it was a moment of collective remembrance and national pride. Many attendees reflected on how Odinga’s life story resonates with the diaspora’s own experiences of perseverance, purpose, and belonging. As one participant shared, “We may be far from home, but tonight we stood together as one Kenyan family honouring a leader who never stopped believing in our nation’s potential.”
The late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga leaves behind a lasting legacy of courage, democracy, and hope — values that continue to guide Kenyans worldwide. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
