When Stephen Kuria first set foot in Australia in 1990, he carried with him the optimism of a young athlete chasing his dream. What he didn’t know then was that his path would take a remarkable turn—one that would lead him from the world of sports to the global mining and energy industry, and ultimately to becoming one of the most influential Kenyan leaders in the diaspora.

Today, Stephen is the Executive Chairman of the Kenya Australia Chamber of Commerce (KACC), an organisation dedicated to strengthening trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two nations. But his story began with a simple belief—that courage and adaptability can transform not just one’s own destiny, but also open doors for others.

After arriving in Australia, Stephen’s early years were marked by transition. He traded sports for studies and eventually found his footing in the mining and resources sector, an industry that would define much of his professional life. Over the next two decades, he built a formidable career working across Australia, Asia, New Zealand, North America, and Africa, gaining experience in mining, oil, gas, and supply chain management.

His professional journey is as diverse as it is inspiring. Stephen has worked with and provided services to Fortune Global 500 companies including Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton, Baker Hughes Global, Swala Energy, and Woodside, among others. With over 18 years of experience in the mining and resources sector, he not only mastered the technical and business aspects of the field but also developed a unique understanding of how global industries can be leveraged to empower African economies.

Through his entrepreneurial vision, Stephen founded two successful consultancy companies operating between Kenya and Australia, bridging expertise, technology, and investment. His firms have helped build business relationships that foster growth, sustainability, and knowledge exchange—transforming the potential of bilateral cooperation into tangible impact.

Yet, beyond business, Stephen’s work carries a deeper purpose. As Executive Chairman of KACC, he has been instrumental in promoting opportunities for Kenyan professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors across both nations. Under his leadership, the Chamber continues to create pathways for collaboration, mentorship, and trade, reflecting his belief that the diaspora is one of Kenya’s greatest strengths.

For Stephen, leadership is not about titles—it’s about building bridges. “Kenyans abroad are not only our ambassadors but also trailblazers,” he often says. His story reminds us that success is not defined by where we start, but by the courage to adapt and the vision to serve others along the way.

Three decades since his arrival in Australia, Stephen Kuria stands as a proud son of Kenya—an entrepreneur, mentor, and connector of worlds. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of Kenyans in the diaspora to dream boldly, work diligently, and give back meaningfully.
