A United Step Forward for Mental Wellness

Sydney, July 5, 2025 — Under the calm skies of Olympic Park, the Kenyan Community in New South Wales (KCNSW) gathered for the second annual Mental Health Walk — an event that was more than just a stroll. It was a heartfelt movement toward connection, awareness, and healing.

Organized by the KCNSW Mental Health Sub-Committee in collaboration with mental health advocate Sayo Kumbasi, the walk offered a warm space for reflection and meaningful conversations around mental wellbeing. From the first step to the final barbecue bite, this gathering carried a powerful message: no one is alone in their journey.

Highlights from the Day

  • Warm Welcome & Group Start: Participants arrived at the Badu Mangroves Car Park, greeted with smiles, mental health resources, and water bottles. As the walk kicked off, so did conversations — some lighthearted, others profound.

  • Community Spirit in Motion: With every step, attendees created a visual thread of unity, walking side by side as a symbol of collective care and resilience. Children, youth, parents, and elders were all part of this beautiful mosaic.

  • Post-Walk BBQ & Conversations: After the walk, attendees enjoyed a relaxed barbecue — sharing food, stories, and support. It wasn’t just about nourishment, but about connection.

Words from the Community

“Thank you so much and the rest of the committee for organizing such a wonderful Mental Health Walk! It was a fantastic event. Your hard work was evident, and it was so inspiring to see people come together to support mental health awareness. Your efforts are truly making a difference.”

“As we walked together, we not only raised awareness around mental health but also created a safe space for connection, understanding, and healing within our community. It’s these small steps taken together that build stronger support systems.”

These voices echoed the purpose of the walk — to normalize mental health discussions and cultivate a community that listens and uplifts.

More Than Just a Walk

This was not a one-time gesture. The event doubled as a reminder that support is ongoing. A direct line was offered for those in need of professional help:

KCNSW’s Mental Health Committee emphasized that creating awareness is just the beginning. The real work is in continued conversations, showing up for each other, and accessing support when needed.

The success of this year's walk proves that these conversations are not only necessary but welcomed. As KCNSW continues to champion mental health advocacy, we’re reminded that community care is a shared responsibility.
